Story Trail Opening
A fine day and a
good crowd opened the story trail on Sunday 11th May.
Jenny Watson, founder FDF member and Councillor, gave a few
words of welcome to a crowd of 100 old and young. Pipes and drums of the
Craigmaroinn Pipe Band led off to walk round the short blue trail. The sound
of the pipes made for a magical scene in the forest.
The innovative signpost 'fingers' with the stories and
pictures on them were much admired. They are unobtrusive to the environment,
yet encourage interaction with walkers. The posts have been set at different
heights so that children of relevant ages may read them.
The stories created and illustrated by the children of Durris School are a
delight. This is the first time that a trail of this kind has been made using
local talent!
The story trail is a partnership between FDF,
Durris School, and Forestry Commission supported by Awards
for All. Thanks to the many people who have made this exciting project
work.
PS we have 5 copies of the Story Trail Book left
selling at £3.00.

Durris Map
“Thanks for the detailed map of the forest. We have used it to find and explore some new paths in Durris.” The map has been distributed to all FDF members.
The map is a prototype for an eventual open publication. Please let us know what you think.
· Is it accurate?
· Is there anything missed out?
· Is the design clear?
· Is it useful to find your way around?
Woodland
Conservation Work.
The
broadleaf woodland area by the Cairn mon Earn entrance has been transformed
after two sessions of volunteer work. Self seeded sitka spruce trees have been
cleared, to allow the beech, rowan, oak and birch to develop. The Forestry
Commission has been asked to remove some larger sitka that are outwith our
capability with hand tools.
We
will have two further activity days after the summer, and welcome young or old
who want to have a gentle workout to improve the environment. There will be an
additional activity day to do path work in Ashentilly Wood.
Two more conservation events are planned :
Sunday September 21st 2003
Sunday November 2nd 2003
We have already made an impressive impact on two sites on either side of the forest, to enable the planted broadleaves to flourish. There is plenty more to do!
If
you have any suggestions, or would like to contribute to one of the working
groups, please contact any committee member.
